PostHeaderIcon M-Audio MidAir Midi Keyboard Controller Review

August 24th, 2009

The M-Audio MidAir is a wireless keyboard controller that comes in two models: the MidAir 25 and the MidAir 37, the model numbers referring to key counts.  Both have wirless midi interfaces (built-in send, small receiver unit) or a stand-alone wireless interface (called the MidAir) can be purchased to plug into existing keyboards.  Both keyboard models also have a midi out jack, of course.

The MidAir keyboard controllers have 8 rotary encoders, a linear data slider, and modulation/pitch-bend wheels.  The MidAir 37 also has 9 more fader slides.  the receiver for the M-Audio MidAir models is a simple USB antenna that plugs into any USB-enabled device and includes midi in/out jacks.  The USB can be for transmission (into a controller or computer software, for instance) or just the power pource with the in/out jacks being the transmitters.

The wireless connection should be good for up to 30 feet, depending on the situation.  This allows you to set up equipment easily and spread out for comfort and portability.  Note that 2.4ghz cordless phones and some cell phones will often interfere with this signal.

QP-M-Audio-MidAir-Fig1In many situations, minimal equipment is a must for portability and intrusion concerns.  In cases like music therapy (where wires and gadgets distract heavily), for instance, it is a boon.

The keyboard controller can be powered by a wall outlet or by six AA batteries.  Power management is a concern, however, since no power level indicator is present and the unit uses power whenever it’s on, whether being used or not.  Rechargable batteries or a Ni-Cad battery pack to fit are a must here.

Very few musicians complain about the wireless connectivity and usefulness of the Midair series, however.  In fact, this is probably it’s greatest selling point.  The M-Audio MidAir series is definitely at the head of the pack in this regard.  Most serious players, however, will not find either keyboard controller model to be good enough to become their primary machine.  They will, however, likely find it nice for composing, tweaking, or just fiddling around while being uncoupled from a desk or workstation.
